Emirati Influencers Target Sudanese Armed Forces Amid RSF Atrocities

Emirati influencers and an official Israeli state X account are increasingly focusing their attention on the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) while the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue to commit mass atrocities against civilians in Sudan’s el-Fasher. The RSF’s brutal seizure of el-Fasher, the last city in Darfur to succumb to its control, has raised significant international concern, as reports indicate that hundreds of civilians have been killed in the process.

RSF’s Control Over el-Fasher

On Sunday, the RSF took full control of el-Fasher, which had been under siege for over 500 days, affecting its 260,000 residents. Eyewitnesses and satellite imagery corroborate reports of mass killings and human rights abuses committed by RSF fighters as they stormed the city.

Emirati Response on Social Media

In response to widespread criticism aimed at the United Arab Emirates (UAE)—a country with documented support for the RSF—Emirati influencers have shifted their narrative to target the SAF. Notably, Israeli state accounts, including the official Arabic language account, have echoed these sentiments.

Linking SAF to Extremism

Emirati analyst Amjad Taha has taken a leading role in portraying the SAF as affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. Under the previous regime of Omar Hassan al-Bashir, the Sudanese military was influenced by religious conservatives. Despite this, a diverse coalition of Sudanese citizens has defended the SAF against the RSF’s aggression.

Earlier this year, Taha described the SAF in a British publication as "the Hamas of Africa," drawing parallels between the two groups. In a recent social media post, he juxtaposed images of Israeli and Sudanese families, claiming both were victims of "Muslim Brotherhood-led forces."

Disturbing Claims and Controversy

The images shared by Taha included one of an Israeli family taken hostage by Hamas, which later claimed they were killed in an Israeli airstrike. Taha alleged that a Sudanese family was killed by the SAF after being questioned about their affiliation with the RSF. However, there have been no credible reports to support these claims.

Israel’s official Arabic account further amplified this narrative, stating, "The terrorism of those who call themselves ‘the Muslim Brotherhood’ is the same savage terrorism everywhere." This message has been echoed by other prominent Emirati figures, drawing parallels between the actions of Hamas and the SAF.

Coordinated Messaging

On Thursday, multiple Emirati influencers issued similar statements defending the UAE’s role in Sudan and condemning Iranian commentary on the situation. Their coordinated messaging suggests a strategic effort to reshape narratives around the UAE’s involvement.

UAE-Israel Relations and Military Cooperation

Since establishing open relations with Israel in September 2020, the UAE has strengthened its ties with Israel, including military cooperation. Reports indicate that the UAE, with Israeli assistance, has developed military bases across the Horn of Africa and southern Yemen.

In conclusion, the situation in Sudan remains dire as the RSF continues to perpetrate violence, while narratives from Emirati influencers and Israeli accounts attempt to shift focus onto the SAF. The complexities of this conflict, intertwined with regional politics and international relations, highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive and humanitarian response.
